Quick update en kerst

Hoi hi Even een snelle update, want we staan op het punt om op een korte vakantie te gaan, maar we lopen een beetje achter met de updates...sorry. Just a quick update, because we are about to go on a quick holiday and are lagging behing with the info. Sorry about that. Dus, in vogelvlucht de belangrijkste dingen. So, very short, the most important things.

Er was nog een paar keer playball en Liam deed ook een beetje mee. Dat vindt hij heel interessant want dan hoort hij er helemaal bij. De groep waar Christiaan volgend jaar in zit is veel groter, dus dan kan hij waarschijnlijk niet 'meelopen', dat zal hij wel jammer vinden.

Het playball jaar werd afgesloten met een picknick waar de jongens voornamelijk veel rondrenden maar het was erg leuk.

Ofcourse there was playball and Liam participated. He thinks that is very interesting, being one of the big boys. But the group Christiaan goed to next year is bigger and than he probably won't be able to join in. He might not like that.

The playball season was finished with a nice picknick where the boys did nots of running around.

Natuurlijk kwam ook Sinterklaas op visite. Bij ons thuis reed hij in de schoen. Zoals je kunt zien kreeg Liam een trein (een vriendje voor Thomas de trein) en natuurlijk nog veel meer.

Op zaterdag gingen we naar Holland House waar de goedheiligman een bezoek zou afleggen. Hij was daar met twee pieten, maar helaas was er geen paard bij. Omdat veel kindjes geen Nederlands (meer) spreken deed de sint het in twee talen en waarschijnlijk was hij daarom zo onder de indruk dat Christiaan een echt Sinterklaasliedje voor hem zong. Stoer hoor!

Ofcourse we also celebrated St Nicolas. He left presents in our shoes and Liam got a train (one of Thomas the tank engine's friends) and lots more.

But we also went to Holland House where Sinterklaas paid a visit to the Dutch community in Auckland.

He soke both Dutch and English since lots of kids don't speak Dutch (anymore). So he was suitably impressed with Christiaan who sang him a real Sinterklaas song!

And what other news do we have? We got new neighbours, a mother with a son and daughter who are quite a bit older than our monsters, but they do love to play with eachother, so that is nice.

En wat is er nog meer gebeurd? We hebben nieuwe buren gekregen, een moeder met een zoon en dochter die allebei een stuk ouder zijn dan onze monsters, maar ze vinden het heel leuk om met elkaar te spelen dus dat is leuk.

Nu zijn natuurlijk mijn ouders aangekomen en hebben we kerst al zo'n beetje achter de rug en vandaag vertrekken we naar de Coromandel. Het is nu 'echt' vakantie want Jolyon heeft een baan gevonden! Het is weliswaar een contract voor 4 maanden, maar dat is beter dan niks, dus dat is fijn!

Nou, rest mij nog iedereen een fijne kerst te wensen en een goed nieuwjaar en hopelijk tot horens, mails of ziens!

Now ofcourse my parents arrived, we have had Christmas and are now heading off to the Coromandel for a holiday. It will reall be one, since jolyon has found a job! It is only a 4 month contract, but nevertheless a job. So that is great!

Well, the only thing left to say now is merry christmas and a very happy new year and we hope to see/hear/skype or mail you all in the new year!

Camping

Hoi hoi, deze keer een berichtje met foto's, gewoon omdat dat nou eenmaal leuker is.

(Inge wrote the Dutch version, and Jols has come through now and done some loose translating... hopefully things match up, but you never know... Tried to mark the English parts, to make it easy to follow.)

ENGLISH: Hi all, this time a little longer post, with photos to stop you getting bored and flicking away to look at something more interesting like the exchange rate graphs on your bank website.

Afgelopen weekend was het hier 'Labour weekend', wat betekent dat iedereen op maandag vrij is. Daar maakten wij gebruik van om te gaan kamperen samen met oom Olaf, tante Hana, Marnie, Isaak en Mariken plus Bev en John (Hana's moeder en haar man), Nathalie (vriendin van de familie, sliep samen met Bev en john in een huisje) en Maria (nichtje, ongeveer even oud als Marnie en die twee dames sliepen samen in een tentje). De kindjes vonden het helemaal leuk (en wij ook). Vlak bij de kampeerplaats liep een beekje die naar een natuurgebied leidde, de andere kant op liep je door een dennenbos zo naar het strand. Allemaal even leuk en mooi. Omdat we toch niet echt goed met zijn allen in onze tent pasten, hebben we een nieuwe tent aangeschaft en daar zijn we best blij mee. Natuurlijk helpt een mooie plaats ook wel mee...

ENGLISH: Last weekend was Labour Weekend here, meaning everyone gets Monday off... nice, but when you don't have a job it seems fairly similar to all the other days... But... Jolyon's brother and family invited us to go camping down in the Coromandel, and we gratefully accepted. There was a whole clan, with Olaf's family of parents + 3 kids, another friend, Olaf's wife's parents and a friend of theirs also. Hope you have that lot sorted in your head... The kids all thought it was the bees knees, and so did we since they pretty much entertained each other for the weekend, only requiring medical attention for bumps and scrapes and some refereeing when play became boisterous. Camping ground was wicked... few minutes walk through a forest to the beach, fantastic staff, and being the first weekend of the season it was pretty empty. We invested in a new tent with separate sleeping areas for kids and us with a space in the middle also, pretty good. Being orange it also helps remind us of the Netherlands.

Hij lijkt misschien klein, maar dat komt vooral omdat er zoveel open ruimte omheen is. Hij heeft drie ruimtes en een redelijke voortent.

ENGLISH: Not as small as it appears. There is room to swing a cat in there.

Afgezien van een klein buitje heeft het heel het weekend eigenlijk niet geregend, dus of hij goed waterdicht is weten we nog niet...

ENGLISH: The tent was not tested by the weather this trip, so stress testing will have to wait for a summer shower later in the year.

Op zaterdag zijn Jolyon en Olaf met de kindjes (behalve Liam) naar het natuurgebied gepeddeld, waar wij ze weer zagen en ze Liam ook even meenamen voor een boottochtje. in tegenstelling tot Christiaan was hij niet echt overtuigd dat dat leuk was.

ENGLISH: On Saturday Jols and Olaf took the kids for a paddle in Olaf's kayaks, including a monster two seater that seems indestructable and super stable. We paddled to an estuary by following a creek, and were met there by inge and the rest of the clan. Liam was not sure that it was such a good idea, not really liking being away from the security of Mama.

Christiaan had een soort wetsuitje van Olaf gekregen en durfde daardoor dapper in het water, maar Liam liet zich door de kou niet weerhouden en deed dapper mee.

ENGLISH: Christiaan inherited a wetsuit thingee from Olaf's kids, and dared to enter the water (still a little bracing). Liam charged in also to make sure he was not missing out on anything.

Hier dus de kayak met Jolyon, Liam en Olaf. Op de voorgrond een kletsnatte en ijskoude Isaak die net van de brug was gesprongen.

En verder Mariken en Christiaan in hun wetsuitjes.

En wat doe je dan? Garnalen vangen en krabjes, met zand en water spelen, achter vogels aanrennen en dat soort dingen...

Maar ook als je niks deed was het goed toeven. Jolyon en Inge zijn nog even naar de monding van de beek gepeddeld, waar hij uitkwam op de zee. Ook erg mooi.

ENGLISH: Photo above the big kayak, with kids. Liam in the kayak, and the rest the greeting party. At the beach they jumped in the water, caught shrimp and crabs in a bucket, got dirty and cold, ignored their parents warnings, ran around madly, ate, ran around some more and just generally were children (hardly surprising). Jols and Inge got to head out for a brief sojourn in the big kayak also.. and we did not sink it which was nice.

Op zondagochtend (erg vroeg) gingen Jolyon en Olaf snorkelen. Het idee was om rivierkreeften (Crayfish), mosselen en vis te vangen, maar na anderhalf uur in het water (Jolyon zonder schoentjes en met handschoenen met gaten erin was net een ijsblokje!) hadden ze helaas alleen mosselen. De vissen waren te klein om te schieten en de Crayfish te klein om legaal mee uit het water te nemen. Jammer maar helaas. Ze hadden wel een leuke ochtend gehad. De mamma's waren met de kids naar het strand gegaan om hen op te wachten maar ze waren via de beek terug gezwommen naar de camping en kwamen met warme koffie in de hand naar het strand gewandeld. Hierna was het de beurt aan de dames om even wat te gaan doen. En dat werd een strand wandeling. Hana nam nog even een (zeer verfrissende!) dip, maar Inge bevroor al bij de gedachte alleen.

ENGLISH: Sunday morning Olaf dragged Jols out of bed at 6 to go snorkelling for crayfish and other sealife that would have preferred that we stayed in bed. As it turned out they needn't have worried too much. We paddled the kayak off the beach to some rocks and spent about 90 minutes in the water hunting crays etc.. Olaf pulled some up but they were all too small, and Jols eyed one up for 10 minutes while deciding on strategy for getting it out of the hole before botching it completely and letting it get away. Spearfishing was also a no go because the fish did not co-operate, so we ended up just bringing some mussels back. We had a good morning though, and saw some cool stuff like being in the middle of a school of hundreds of mullet, some stingrays and the weather was awesome. Jols was diving in not enough wetsuit though and the cold forced them to stop.

Hoe dan ook, het was allemaal leuk, gezellig en goed. Maar alle kindjes waren supermoe toen we maandagmiddag terug reden. Een vroeg avondmaal en vroeg naar bed dus. Liam sliep super-lang, maar Christiaan stond om 6 uur naast ons bed helaas. Het was dinsdag, dus had hij Playball.

ENGLISH: It was pretty cool, and the kids absolutely loved the experience. They were shattered in the car home, so we stuck them in the bath, forced food in their mouths and got them into bed early. Liam had a supersleep, but Christiaan was at out bedside at 6 unfortunately. We were in bed at 9 the night before though so survived. Tuesday, the day after we got back, Christiaan had Playball - which he started a few weeks ago.

Hij deed goed zijn best en won de trofee (normaal krijgen ze een medaille, maar het jongetje die het de week ervoor had verdiend was er niet). Daar was hij natuurlijk superblij mee!

De trofee wordt gegeven voor goed je best doen, goed luisteren en plezier hebben en dat deed hij zeker.

Maar hij ziet het toch ook als een 'Piston cup' (de trofee in de animatiefilm Cars) en die krijg je voor het hardste rennen en het eerste/beste/snelste enzovoorts zijn. Tja, maak hem dan maar eens wijs dat hij hem daar niet voor gekregen heeft.

Vandaag waren Christiaan en Liam allebei bij de kindy, want ik was daar als 'parent helper' en dan mag Liam ook blijven. Die vind dat geweldig en speelt aan een stuk door. Vanavond was hij dus helemaal stuk. Om vijf uur was hij alleen nog maar in staat om vloor de televisie te zitten en crackers te eten.

Nou, dat was het weer even.

Oh ja, nu jullie in de wintertijd zitten hebben we 12 uur tijdverschil, dus dat rekent lekker makkelijk! Maar dat betekent ook dat ik nu maar eens naar mijn mandje moet. Ik moet ook nog mijn boek uit zien te lezen voor de bookclub van morgen...

ENGLISH: Playball is playing sports games with pre-school kids to teach them some sporting moves, and also laying the foundation for team sports. The emphasis is on participating, listening and executing the moves as best you can. Tuesday Christiaan got the trophy, which is awarded for doing your best and listening well... he sees it as confirmation of his being the best though, and considers it the 'Piston Cup' (see the Cars movie for reference). I am not looking forward to next week when he has to bring the trophy back...

Today Christiaan also went to Kindy and Inge went along as parent helper. Liam was awake, so he went along and got to spend a few hours at kindy playing with the big boys - he loves it!

For those interested in how the job hunting is going... well, could be better, but things seem to be picking up, Jols has had a few interviews in the last weeks, so fingers crossed one of them will pan out and we can indulge ourselves in the purchase of frivolous toys.

Here we are again

Hoi, hallo allemaal, daar zijn we weer. Het is een tijdje geleden, ik weet het. Maar eerst kon ik niet inloggen en moest ik caches clearen en cookies verwijderen en van alles en nog wat en nadat ik dat allemaal had gedaan, had ik natuurlijk geen tijd meer over om nog te typen. Toen wilde ik een video'tje van Christiaan erop zetten, maar inmiddels is het nog steeds niet van de camera af, dus doen we nu maar een gewone update en komt de video later misschien nog een keer, als jullie geluk hebben ... :-)

Hi there everyone, here we are again. It has been a while, I know. First I could not log in and had to clear cache and cookies and all sorts of stuff and after doing all that I did not have any time left to do any typing! Then I wanted to upload a video of Father's day but I still haven't taken it off the camera, so now I am just going to do a little update and maybe the clip will appear another time, if you are lucky ... :-)

Het is eigenlijk best rustig geweest hier, niet heel veel bijzonders gedaan. Maar komend weekend is een lang weekend en dan gaan we kamperen met Olaf en Hana en de kids en ik geloof dat er nog meer familieleden komen. Het klinkt als een leuke kampeerplaats dus ik ben benieuwd.
Verder is helaas Christiaans vriendje naar een andere kindy gegaan dus dat was erg jammer, maar we zijn al wel een keertje wezen spelen en hij hier, dus hij is niet helemaal uit beeld. Tja, nou maar hopen dat hij snel een ander vriendje vindt.

It has been rather quiet here lately, we haven't been up to much. Next weekend is labour weekend and we are going camping with Olaf and Hana and the kids and some more relatives I believe. It sounds like a great camp ground, so we are looking forward to this.
Apart from that the biggest thing was that Christiaans friend at kindy started at another kindy and that was no good ofcourse. But we have been over for a playdate and he has been here, so at least he is not completely out of sight. oh well, now we'll just cross our fingers and hope he will find another friend soon.

Opa en Omi in Nieuw-Zeeland-de foto's

Nou, nou, de kindjes zijn vervelend ziek geweest. Beiden hoge koorts gehad, hoesten en snotteren, maar we lijken er nu allemaal weer overheen. Dus, Christiaan is naar de kindy, Liam ligt in bed en mamma Inge kan even typen.
Zoals al eerder gemeld kwamen opa en omi vanuit Nederland op visite en die brachten natuurlijk allerhande lekkers mee. Maar daarnaast was het leukste cadeau natuurlijk opa en omi's aanwezigheid. Dus hebben we allemaal leuke dingen gedaan.

Now that the kids finally seem to have gotten over their sicknesses (high fever, coughing and VERY runny noses) we are finally getting back to normal. So Christiaan is at kindy, Liam is taking a nap and mamma Inge is typing.
As you may have read earlier, Opa and Omi were over from the Netherlands, bringing all kinds of yummies and goodies ofcourse! But that aside, the best present was their presence and so we did lots of fun things.
But first: the unpacking...

Eerst dus uitpakken...
En natuurlijk een bezoek aan de Van Daalens hier, en omdat het Marnie's verjaardag was, kwam dat mooi uit. We hebben 'in de achtertuin van oom Olaf' nog even lekker gewandeld en we hebben KUBB gespeeld in de tuin. Vooral Liam vond dit erg interessant en deed enthousiast mee!

Then there was a visite to the Van Daalens here. Marnie had her birthday so that added a special note. We also went for a walk 'in uncle Olaf's backyard', which is always good. And we played KUBB in the yard and especially Liam thought that was pretty interesting. He kept it up and was very much involved in the whole thing.





En wat nog meer? Mamma Inge had zichzelf opgegeven als 'parent helper' bij de kindy en dus mochten mamma en omi mee met Christiaan.
En Christiaan heeft inmiddels een skateboard (Lightning!) met toebehoren verdiend en vind zichzelf een hele pief.

And what else? Mamma Inge put herself on the board as parent helper at the kindy and so mamma and omi were allowed to come to kindy with Christiaan.
And Christiaan managed to earn himself a skateboard (Lightning!) and trimmings and feels like a very big boy. As you do...

De dierentuin blijft ook altijd een leuk uitje en het is altijd weer verrassend wat de kindjes boeit. In dit geval dus een klein kuikentje. Liam ging er speciaal voor op zijn knietjes, stak zijn handje uit en maakte kleine smakgeluidjes om hem te lokken (als bij een poes). Christiaan vond het vooral erg schattig en dat was 'ie ook.

Een andere leuke dag was het uitje naar Devonport, waar we met de pont heen gingen en waar de kindjes ook lekker aan het strand hebben gespeeld. En opa en omi hebben lekker gewandeld met mooi uitzicht.

The zoo is always a favourite and it does not fail to amaze us what the kids find most interesting. In this case it was a little chick. Liam went down on his knees and held out his had and made little noises to lure him closer (like it was a cat). And Christiaan just said he thought is was adorable, which it was.

Another nice outing was the trip to Devonport. A lovely area that you can easily reach by ferry from downtown Auckland and just has a really nice feel to it. The kids had a play at the beach and opa and omi did a walk.

En ook deze keer gingen we naar de Skytower. Omdat het nu beter weer was hadden we veel beter zicht en dat was erg leuk.

And again we went to the Skytower. Because the weather was nice, we had great views which made it all lots of fun.

In het weekend zijn we een dagje naar Huia gereden, een gebied net buiten Auckland waar onze vriend Glen een huisje heeft, al woont hij eigenlijk bij zijn vriendin Alex, letterlijk bij ons 'om de hoek'. Het is een prachtig gebied en een leuke trip. Al hadden we bijna allemaal een beetje last van wagenziekte vanwege de bochtige weggetjes. Maar mooie uitzichten, prachtig strand, een leuk 'buurthuis' waar een tentoonstelling van lokale kunstenaars was met prachtige dingen, ernaast een speeltuin, bij het museumpje twee lammetjes die melk dronken uit een fles en natuurlijk Glen en Alex. En voor wie zich nou afvraagt waarom Glen bovenaan Christiaan zijn lijstje van favoriete personen staat...zie de foto's. Glen is lid van de vrijwillige brandweer en leeft bovendien helemaal mee met de kids. Erg gaaf. Ik geloof niet dat Christiaan ooit een grotere glimlach op zijn gezicht heeft gehad. Het kostte ook erg veel moeite om hem even de helm aan Liam te lenen voor de foto ('Hij is geen echte brandweer, want hij is te klein!').

On Sunday we drove to Huia for the day which is a lovely area just north/west of Auckland, where Glen has a batch. Though he spends just about all his time at his girlfriend Alex's, who is literally just down the road from us. Anyway it is a beautiful area and a nice trip, even though most of us got car sick because of the windy roads. But there were gorgeous beaches and views, a working farm, a community centre where they had an exhibit of local artists, some of which was just great, there were two little lambs just outside the museum who got bottle fed and there was a small playground and a big one and icecream. And there were Glen and Alex. Now if you were wondering how Glen got to be at Christiaans top of the favourite persons list, just check out the pics.
Glen is a volunteer fire fighter and on top of that he gets right into the kids' play. Really cool. I don't think we have ever seen Christiaan with a bigger smile on his face. It really took a lot of talking to get him to lend his helmet to Liam for the picture. He said 'Liam is not a real fireman, he is too little!'

Maandag gingen we naar MOTAT, een groot openlucht museum over transport, geschiedenis, technologie en miniatuur treintjes, allemaal erg leuk) en daar dronken we ook koffie, zoals op veel plaatsen, maar helaas hebben de kindjes daarvoor nog geen zitvlees ontwikkeld...

On Monday we went to MOTAT (Big display on technology, history, transport and miniature trains, all pretty nice) and had coffee there too, like in many other places. Unfortunately most of the time the kids were not all that patient for us to actually finish them.


Daarna gingen we voor een midweek naar de Coromandel, een soort landtong waar veel Nieuw-Zeelanders vakantie vieren, vooral omdat het een prachtig gebied is. Het weer leek verschrikkelijk te worden, maar het viel alles mee en we zijn op een grote boerderij geweest en op het strand en gewoon lekker geteut. Boekjes lezen enzo...

Op de terugweg stopten we nog even in Thames en brachten daar een halve dag door.

After that we spend a midweek in the Coromandel. A nice sort of peninsula where lots of Kiwis enjoy their holidays. The weather looked particularly dreary, but turned out to be ok and we had some lovely days. At a farm and at the beach and just dilly-dallying around the house. Reading books and such...

On the way back to Auckland we made a side step to Thames and spend half a day there.

Sand and water is all they need to be perfectly happy.

En wat doe je verder zoal? Lekker bioscoopje spelen thuis, met popcorn erbij natuurlijk.

And what else do you do? Play movie theater, with popcorn ofcourse!

En toen moesten ze alweer naar huis... op zaterdag brachten we ze met zijn allen naar het vliegtuig en nu moeten we wachten tot december.

And then they had to go home again... on Saturday we took them to the airport and now we'll have to wait untill December.

We hebben natuurlijk volle dagen zo met opa en omi hier, dus deze keer weinig tekst maar een paar lieve foto's van onze kereltjes.

Opa en Omi in Nieuw-Zeeland

Friday 14 August, a dreary, grey and wet day, something special happened. The morning was spent drawing and colouring. Outside was cold and rainy anyway. But what was going on? Opa and omi were due to arrive in Auckland and welcome pictures needed making!
Christiaan and Jolyon went to pick them up from the airport and Christiaan was beside himself and wanted to hug the both of them at once.
Back in Dell Ave he had to show them around, the playroom, his bedroom and Liam's and everything else. After that we had some homemade pumpkinsoup for lunch and there was more reading and playing and, and, and ... Both boys were hyper all day, but that was understandable really.
The Dora-cookies were a real treat as was the Calve peanutbutter ofcourse and lots, lots more...
Today, Saturday, we visited the museum and fed the ducks and that was all pretty good.

Vrijdag 14 augustus, een natte, druilerige en kille dag, gebeurde er iets speciaals. De hele ochtend werd er getekend en gekleurd, want er moesten welkomsttekening gemaakt worden. Want Opa en omi kwamen aan in Auckland! De tekening mochten op de kussens liggen met een lekker chocolaatje erop. Maar op een gegeven moment kwam Liam een wikkeltje brengen. 'Op mamma!' Hmm... Nadere inspectie toonde dat er nog maar een kussen met een chocolaatje was...
Dat was natuurlijk snel weer rechtgezet.
Christiaan en Jolyon haalden samen opa en omi op van het vliegveld. Christiaan was natuurlijk door het dolle heen, wilde ze allebei tegelijk knuffelen enzovoorts. Maar ook Liam (die elke keer als de laptop op tafel komt zegt: Omi kijken -skypen dus-) was meteen blij en vond het helemaal gewoon dat ze er waren. Natuurlijk moeten de kleine mannen meteen de speelkamer laten zien en de slaapkamers en, en, en ... nou ja, nog veel meer. Toen was het tijd voor lunch met zelfgemaakte pompoensoep en daarna moest er natuurlijk nog meer gespeeld en voorgelezen worden. De Dorakoekjes vielen erg in de smaak en de Calve pindakaas ook en nog veel meer natuurlijk. Zoals al wel te verwachten viel waren de jongens heel de dag hyper maar gelukkig niet al te stout.
Vandaag (zaterdag) zijn we naat het museum geweest omdat het wel warm was maar toch een beetje naar regen neigde en dat was erg gezellig. Naderhand nog even het park ingegaan en de eendjes (en ook de mensen) gevoerd en ook dat was weer even leuk.

Zoals we al eens eerder hadden getypt zijn we dus 'Friends of the Zoo', vrienden dus en gaan dan ook regelmatig. Deze week stond de tijger centraal, die zomaar erg actief was en goed zichtbaar. De jongens (alle drie) vonden het allemaal erg mooi.

Like you may have read on our blog earlier, we are Friends of the Zoo here in Auckland and go quite regularly. This week the tiger was in the spotlights, since he was very active and visible and the boys (all three of them) liked that very much.

Another thing we like to do is go to the Domain, a park-like area in Auckland where you can feed the ducks. That is if the pigeons, sparrows, seagulls and geese don't beat them to it (they are quite slow getting out of the water.

But we usually have a little walk around, climb the tree or go to the museum, depending on the weather.

Jols thinks the sparrows are pretty neat, which they are, doing kamikaze dives to intercept the bread you throw at the ducks and they can take bread out of your hands while flying. Pretty cool. See video below...

Wat we ook regelmatig doen is even naar 'the Domain', een gebied in Auckland waar ook het museum staat, waar een aantal tuinen zijn en een eendenvijver. Hier gaan we dan ons oude brood aan de eendjes proberen te geven. Proberen, omdat vooral de duiven erg opdringerig zijn (de eerste keer zaten er binnen een mum van tijd 7 op Jolyons armen), vorige keer pakte een gans een hele boterham uit Liams hand (die dat niet leuk vond, temeer omdat hij er zelf ook van aan het eten was) en ze komen vaak niet het water uit (maar je mag ze niet in het water voeren). Van alle gegadigden vinden we dan de mussen eigenlijk nog het leukst. Zij voeren kamikazevluchten uit om het brood dat je naar de eenden gooit te onderscheppen en komen het ook (al vliegend) uit je hand pakken. Best cool.

Verder kun je in de Domain wandelen en er is een hele leuke klimboom, waar Christiaan nu al best een beetje in durft. Liam jaagt liever achter vogels aan, waar Christiaan overigens maar al te graag aan mee doet.

En dan is er nog de speeltuin hier bijna om de hoek waar ik steeds vergeet een foto van te nemen. Deze is een oude van Omi's camera.

En wat Christiaan bijzonder graag doet is scheppen op het strand. Wat, dat maakt niet uit. Een gat graven, een kasteel bouwen of zand in het water scheppen, allemaal goed. Steentjes in het water gooien ook.

Liam wil ook wel scheppen, maar is duidelijk minder enthousiast. Hij gaat vaak net zo lief de meeuwen wegjagen...

En hier zijn de mannen dus hard aan het werk, met een of ander belangrijk waterwerk. Tja, je bent een Nederlander of je bent het niet natuurlijk... Zie ook de video hieronder...

Sick

Oh well, it seems the flu has caught up with us, but apart from colds, coughs and mild fevers we are doing alright really. It might have been the playing on the beach for two days last weekend (and the kids getting their feet wet ofcourse), but it has been a slow week this way. We will soon post pics from the beach...
Nou, hier is dus zo'n beetje het hele huishouden ziek: verkouden, hoesten en beetje koorts, maar allemaal niets ernstigs, dus als het de 'swine flu' is, heeft hij ons niet erg te pakken. Hopelijk zijn we na het weekend allemaal weer beter. Het zou natuurlijk kunnen komen doordat we afgelopen weekend twee dagen op het strand hebben gespeeld. Het was heerlijk weer, de kindjes hadden hun laarsjes aan maar kregen het toch voor elkaar om natte voeten te krijgen. Christiaan door een golf te vangen in zijn laars en Liam door om te vallen in een plas. Nou ja, plas, het gat dat ze aan het graven waren.
Hoe dan ook, het was leuk en we zullen snel wat foto'tjes plaatsen.

What's new this week?
Creche and kindy!
Jols and Inge have joined the Olympic Pool and Fitness Centre where there is also a creche. We have booked Christiaan and Liam in for the Wednesdaymornings (9.15-11.15). Last Wednesday was the first time and apart from some tears from Liam (which were quickly remedied with his dummy), they did great. Mamma and pappa had an assessment and a short gym session and a swim and afterwards we all had a swim together. The boys really enjoyed that although Liam seemed to prefer climbing out of the pool and running laps around it. Afterwards they were wasted!

And after first finding a place for Christiaan at Orakei kindy, we received a call that he could also go to Constance Colegrove in Remuera, so we went and had a look and it looked great, especially the outside:

This is only one 'corner' really. There is just lots to do!

Because they had lots of kids starting at the same time, Christiaan could not officially start untill the third week of term, but he can come and play if one of us comes with him. So we now go twice a week (Tuesdays and Thursdays) from 13.00 till 15.30 h and he seems to enjoy it. So that is good. (Although he still says he wants to go back to the Netherlands or back to 'our own house' every now and again...

Well, what else? Jolyon had his wisdom tooth pulled, with apparently was a piece of cake. They even put some numbing gel on beforehand so you don't feel the injection! The tooth came out without any trouble at all and Jolyon is off playing hockey already, so that is good.

Last couple of nights there have been howling winds and bad rains, but the days are really quite nice. So, all good, apart from not having jobs yet...

En nog even in het Nederlands:

We zijn dus lid geworden van de Olympic Pool and Fitness Centre, waar ze ook een creche hebben. Dus hebben we Christiaan en Liam daar ingeschreven en nu gaan ze voortaan elke woensdagochtend daar naar de creche terwijl pappa en mamma naar de gym gaan en gaan zwemmen. Afgelopen woensdag was de eerste keer en afgezien van wat traantjes bij Liam (die snel weg waren toen hij zijn tut en doekje kreeg van de juf) ging het helemaal goed. Wij hadden een intake-gesprek waarbij ze allerlei info verzamelen en nu voor ons een programma schrijven en daarna hebben we allebei een korte gym-sessie gedaan en gezwommen. Om 11.15 toen we de kindjes op moesten halen zijn we uit het water gesprongen en hebben nog even met de kindjes samen gezwommen. Die waren daarna echt helemaal af! Maar het was wel leuk.

De tweede en derde foto hierboven zijn van de Kindy, dat is een soort peuterspeelzaal/kleuterschool waar Christiaan sinds deze week heen gaat. Het heeft een heel gaaf buitenspeelgebied, best groot met van alles en nog wat en ook binnen is er van alles te vinden en te doen. Van een enorme zandbak tot klimtoestellen en schommels, treinen, schilderen, knutselen, kleien, boeken, muziekinstrumenten tot puzzels, poppenhoek, huisje in de tuin, keukentje bij de zandbak, plastic dieren, verkleedspullen en nog veel meer. De binnenfoto is maar een hoek van de zaal die een soort L vorm heeft. Hier is een poppenhoek, knutsel/puzzeltafels en een leeshoek, een bouwhoek met hele grote houten blokken en een mat waar ze samen komen om hun middag-snack te eten en naar een verhaal te luisteren of liedjes te zingen.

Het is allemaal redelijk ongestructureerd in de middagsessies (afgezien van de snack-tijd, opruimtijd en verhaaltjestijd). Die sessies zijn drie keer per week (di, wo, do) en dat is voor 3 tot 4 jaar. de 4 en 5 jarigen komen 5 keer per week een ochtend en dan wordt er ook aan een soort vroeg-en-voorschoolse educatie gedaan. Dat begint voor Christiaan dus pas over een half jaar.

Omdat de kindy veel nieuwe kinderen tegelijk binnenkregen kan hij officieel pas in de derde week beginnen, maar tot die tijd kan hij komen als er een van ons meegaat. Dat doen we nu dus twee keer per week (di en do) omdat we het idee hadden dat hij dat echt nodig heeft. Liam slaapt op die tijd nog, dus de ander is dan thuis met hem.

Verder? Oh ja, Jols heeft deze week zijn tand laten trekken en dat ging gelukkig heel makkelijk. Hij groeide een beetje naar buiten en de wang raakte daardoor geirriteerd (en deze keer was hij ontstoken geraakt, dus was het tijd om hem eruit te laten halen). Maar naar de tandarts dus. Hier hebben ze een verdovende gel die ze eerst in je mond smeren (schijnbaar ook met vodka-smaak, maar Jols had helaas aardbei) zodat je de prikken van de verdoving niet voelt! Dan dus de verdoving en weer wachten en toen kwam het echte werk. Maar het ging zo makkelijk dat de tandarts zelfs 50 dollar van de rekening aftrok! Wat wil je nog meer?

Beter weer misschien? Nou ja we mogen eigenlijk niet klagen. 'sNachts gaat het flink tekeer met wind en enorme regenbuien, maar overdag is het eigenlijk best lekker en kun je met een vest of truitje aan makkelijk naar buiten.

Nou, dat was het wel weer geloof ik.

Dus, groeten voor iedereen aan alle kanten van de wereld vanaf deze kant!

Eerste Nieuw-Zeelandse medailles zijn binnen!

Hoi hoi, even een heel korte update, want dit weekend zijn we in Rotorua, waar de noord-eiland club kampioenschappen zijn, we zitten in een hostel en ik heb nog 5 minuten e-mailtijd over. Even en heel korte update daarom.
Jols en Inge hebben allebei gespeld in het toernooi, Inge in een damesteam en Jols in de top divisie. Beiden redelijk succesvol: zilver voor Jols en goud voor Inge. Beiden veel plezier gehad en lekker gehockeyed en de kindjes hebben uren in het water gelegen met nog twee andere kids. Erg leuk, maar ze waren ook helemaal stuk!
We blijven nog een dagje langer om morgen even de toerist uit te hangen hier en dan rijden we weer terug naar Auckland.

More container rambling and unpacking

As promised, here is a little more detail about the move, and the new house. A few people have commented that they are keen to view some photos, so here they are...

So, we have moved into Remuera - viewed by some as the snobs capital of Auckland. There are certainly many european cars driving around like Audis and Porsches, BMW's etc, which cost a lot more here than in NL, so there might be something to that. In any case, it is pretty close to the city, where we expect to be working, nice quiet streets, beach 5 minutes away, park 2 minutes away... all in all we are pretty happy with it.

The container arrived on a nice day, which made moving in easier... when they opened the doors we were relieved to see that the container looked exactly like it did when we closed and sealed them. So far not a single breakage from the container trip - the only casualty seems to be the remote for the DVD player which has given up on us [Note added later: after visiting the repair shop today, it appears that the problem with the remote was flat batteries, and idiots trying to use it]. We, however, have been much more effective in breaking things. List so far:
- One glass top for coffee table - broken by Jols when moving boxes
- One car door from the neighbour - scratched and dented by Christiaan on his bike. That is what you get when you don't stop when papa tells you to. (Christiaan has given me 1$ out of his piggy bank to help pay for it...)
- One nice scratch on the bumper of the new car (still in discussion about who caused it. I am adamant that it could not have been me, but most likely it is some uncoordinated individual who hit our car while we were parked)
- Two Mater Cars toys - sacrificed to the gods of boisterous play
I am sure that we will be able to add to this list in the near future.

Anyway, we were probably moved in within two days, and since then have been unpacking the last things of non-essentials. So, the layout of the house is basically:

GROUND FLOOR
- Outside a carport with garage door
- Outside some off street parking for us
- Rumpus room (play room) for the kids
- Laundry
- Bedroom #4 (doubling as office and guest bedroom) with ensuite
- Spa pool room*

FIRST FLOOR
- Kitchen
- Living area/ dining area
- Door from living area onto sundeck (which is basically the roof of the carport)
- Bedroom #3 (Christiaan)
- Bathroom

SECOND FLOOR
- Master bedroom (#2)
- Bathroom/ensuite
- Walk-in closet
- A small room that has previously been used for storage, but is perfect for bedroom #1, for Liam

*Please note that although you got all excited by us having a spa pool it does not work. The spa itself is currently being used to store our underwaterhockey gear, and the room has turned into the MDF storage area.

So far so good... priorities right now are:
- Find a kindergarten for Christiaan - from 3-4 years kids here usually go to a subsidised kindy 3 afternoons a week. From 4-5 (school age is 5) kids would go 5 mornings to kindy.
- Check out day care options for all.
- Relax and enjoy the famous NZ winter (some very nice rainstorms already witnessed)
- Find a gym, especially for Jols, who is frankly falling apart again.
- Anything else? Um, let me think... ah, yes. And find a job.

We are off to the North Island underwater hockey champs this weekend in Rotorua, and will tack on 1.5 days of sightseeing type things on the end. Hopefully we will both be able to play, but we will see how the schedule is looking.

We have been filling in the days applying for jobs, finding entertaining things for the kids to do, and trying to get internet and phone working. The TV aerial needs some work too. We have both been focussed on getting the house sorted, but that is now done... time to do some serious work seeking. Sigh.

Christiaan's english is going amazingly well - the little man is confidently talking to everyone in english these days, and at the moment will often ask papa something, be sent to mama and rephrase the question flawlessly in dutch. Impressive stuff.
